I called my Mom and said, “I am going to college.”
“George Kitz, ConVal guidance counselor and crisis manager, convinced me that I could leave substance abuse behind and return to school in my junior year. I still doubted I would finish high school. When I had a CVCSF letter telling me that I could have mentoring help and compete for a scholarship grant, in spite of my really bad start, I called my Mom and said, ‘I am going to college.’ This was more than either of us ever expected.”
Alycia barely graduated with her ConVal High School Class of 2007. Her selection to participate in the CVCSF challenge for disadvantage students turned her around. Her defining moment came just in time. She moved from “don’t care about education” to overachiever in a heartbeat and made Dean’s List in her first semester at Hesser College. Not satisfied with this, she started on her next degree at Hesser immediately after earning her associate degree. Her long term goal is to work with young people to help them avoid the pitfalls that almost prevented her from achieving her full potential.
